Portmeirion

This unique village is set on its own private peninsula on the southern shores of Snowdonia. It was created by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis in 1925 to demonstrate how a naturally beautiful place could be developed without spoiling it. Aside from its iconic architecture, scenic surroundings and vast woodland gardens, Portmeirion is home to hip hotels, a huddle of historic cottages, a spa and award winning restaurants.

Portmeirion is made up of about 50 buildings most of which are used as hotel or self-catering accommodation and surrounded by 70 acres of sub-tropical woodland gardens.

The village has several cafes including a self-service restaurant, tea rooms, Angel Ices plus the Castell Deudraeth and the Hotel Portmeirion. It is advisable to pre-book a table if wishing to dine at the hotel.

The Prisoner

It really is unique. For a start, it’s a complete village of architecturally amazing buildings set on its own private peninsula overlooking sand, sea and mountain. It was the creation of iconoclast and architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, who populated his make-believe village with Italianate, oriental and Tudor-style buildings. Reality and unreality are blurred to such an extent that Portmeirion is forever remembered as the setting - make that the star - of The Prisoner, the baffling 1960s TV series that has become a cult worldwide.

In the middle of it all, like a presiding bejewelled potentate, sits waterfront Hotel Portmeirion, whose beguiling, eclectic character matches that of its surroundings.

Decoration and furnishings in its glittering rooms are based on many disparate influences and themes. There’s the Mirror Room, for example, with floor-to-ceiling gilt-framed mirrors. Throughout you’ll see artefacts and antiques brought from as far afield as China. The curvilinear art deco dining room is a stunning space designed to convey the atmosphere of a grand ocean liner. At high tide it seems almost to be afloat, an impression enhanced by the stone ship permanently moored outside (Sir Clough liked a joke)!

Patrick McGoohan not only starred as Number Six, the leading role in The Prisoner, he was also the creator and driving force behind the 17 episode series. The series was financed by ITC Entertainment with David Tomblin as the Producer and George Markstein as script editor.

Many well known actors had guest roles in the series: Leo McKern, Peter Bowles, Eric Portman, Patrick Cargill, Mary Morris, Paul Eddington and Donald Sinden to name but a few.

It was probably one of the most influential pieces of televison of the 1960s not only in the UK and USA but also in France, Australia and many other countries. Even The Beatles were fans. Its cult status was confirmed with the establishment in the 1970s of the official Prisoner Appreciation Society, Six of One.
