The Thames Valley & Chilterns

The Thames Valley & Chilterns

Visit one of the loveliest locations on the River Thames - Marlow. The National Trust village West Wycombe and Turville famous as the setting for the comedy ‘the vicar of Dibley’ starring Dawn French

Marlow

Marlow is without a doubt one of the loveliest locations on the River Thames, set amongst the rich meadows of the river valley and alongside the woodlands of the Chiltern Hills.

The vibrant Georgian market town is made up of historic streets and an abundance of boutique shops, restaurants, cafes and bistros all adding to the town’s unique charm.

The towns most famous landmark is the suspension bridge which spans the River Thames and joins the counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

Marlow is also home to one of Britain’s most premier rowing clubs which has produced many Olympic oarsmen including Sir Steve Redgrave whose statue stands in Higginson Park.

West Wycombe

The village of West Wycombe was once owed by the Dashwood family. It was an important coaching stop on the main road between London and Oxford. At its peak, no fewer than seven inns and alehouses thrived in the tiny village.

In 1767 there were 17 public houses listed in the village. Although it is on the busy A40, the village retains much of its historical charm and the High Street has a number of traditional shops as well as three pubs.

You can explore streets lined with cottages and inns of varying architectural styles dating from the 16th century or visit a variety of quaint gift shops. At the end of the village is St. Paul's church, locally known as the 'Winter Church'. (The church of St. Lawrence on West Wycombe Hill is known as the 'Summer Church' as there was no road up to St. Lawrence until 1928).

Turville

Turville has featured in quite a number of films over the years. The windmill which stands above the village is the one used in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Other films include 'Father Came Too' and 'Goodnight Mr Tom'.

Turville is the home to the Vicar of Dibley, the BBC sitcom starring Dawn French. It has also been used for various Midsomer Murders, Jonathan Creek, Miss Marple and The Day of the Triffids.
