Festivites in County Durham

Beamish at Christmas

Discover festive celebrations from the Georgian, Edwardian, 1940s and 1950s periods. See traditional decorations, enjoy festive food and drink and try Christmas crafts.

Visitors can see Father Christmas in his Grotto, meet his reindeer, take a spin on the real ice rink at The Fairground and browse the stalls at the Christmas Bazaar in The 1900s Town park. A small extra charge applies for the Grotto, ice rink and fairground.

Durham

4 Christmas Markets and around 400 independent traders in the city centre. The Craft & Gift Marquee on Palace Green, the Regional Producers’ Market in the wonderfully atmospheric Cloisters of Durham Cathedral, Durham Market Hall – home to 40 local independent businesses, and the Festive Outdoor Market in Durham Market Place.

There will be plenty of entertainment including carol singers and festive live music. No visit is complete without heading into the Cathedral with its 25ft Norwegian Spruce and Nativity Scene. In a nod to the regions rich mining history, the traditional nativity figures are replaced by mining figures, including a pit pony instead of a donkey and the innkeeper dressed as a miner.
