To protect Manchester's ailing cotton trade and to avoid the already hefty charges imposed by the railway and Liverpool Docks, the Industrialists of the 19thC period decided to create a canal which would allow sea going ships to reach Manchester. Thus a 35 mile inland waterway was created featuring 4 road bridges, 5 sets of locks, 5 railway viaducts, 7 swing road bridges and a swing viaduct. On this awe inspiring cruise, you will enjoy spectacular scenery and a lively commentary along the way. Hear the story of how this magnificent waterway shaped the city of Manchester and the North West of England. The journey ventures through locks and bridges that have remained largely unchanged since their construction over 100 years ago; plus shows you some of the region's most stunning architectural and natural sights.

Our journey commences when we board our Mersey Ferry at Seacombe on the Wirral at 10.30am. There is a licensed bar on board and also the opportunity to purchase snacks and refreshements. Our 6 hour cruise holds many highlights, including the Queen Elizabeth II Dock at Eastham. Some of the dock facilities are still in operation, revealing along its route the history of one of Britains's major waterways. We conclude our journey at Salford Docks, home to media city, housing ITV and BBC - the quays area has undergone extensive redevolpment.
