Day 1
We depart our pick up this morning from our local pick ups to travel to beautiful Cheshire and Lyme Park. Step back in time to the Regency era - a time which saw great rejuvenation for Lyme. Enjoy lavish interiors, try out the billiards table in the Long Gallery, read a book in the library, or visit our Dressing Room to try on the finest Regency regalia. The 1,400 acre estate with its medieval herd of red deer offers fantastic walks and stunning views. For a more tranquil walk explore the elegant Rose Garden, Ravine Garden or the luxurious herbaceous borders next to the reflecting lake where a certain Mr Darcy met Miss Bennet in the BBC production of 'Pride and Prejudice'.
We continue to Knutsford and to the Cottons Hotel & Spa. Time to freshen up and enjoy the spa facilities before dinner this evening.
Day 2
A leisurely start to the day begins with a hearty breakfast. Before, we head to one of the most popular National Trust sites in the country, Quarry Bank Mill. Quarry Bank Mill is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. Built in 1784, the mill is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and inspired the 2013 television series The Mill. We include a Guided Tour of the Mill and the Apprentice House to step into the lives of the pauper children who worked in the mill. Children as young as eight years old were apprenticed at Quarry Bank, working 10 hour days in the mill and living cramped together under the control of the Apprentice House superindentents.
B, DDay 3
We depart the Cottons Hotel & Spa and make our way to Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest private residence in the United Kingdom. It has the longest façade of any country home in Europe. Starting as a modest Jacobean house in the 17th century, it would be rebuilt and expanded to enormous proportions by a series of aristocratic families. The house would become the seat of the Earls Fitzwilliam who would rise to be one of the wealthiest families in England due to profits from the coal industry.
At one time, over 1,000 staff members would be employed to run and look after the 300+ room house and the vast estate. However, a series of scandals, inheritance fights, untimely deaths, and the nationalization of coal would soon lead to both the end of the Earl Fitzwilliam line and the shuttering of this great house.
